I would first like to say a massive HELLO to everyone! It has been a while since my last blog post, so I thought I would tell you all about my first shoot back, post-lockdown. I had the pleasure of working with Viki, and her beautiful mare, Flo. I have worked with Viki before, both on a training day, and on a beach ride, so I knew their partnership well, which made transitioning out of lockdown that much easier.

A couple of months ago I’d put out a notice on my social media, asking for volunteers to help me build up my portfolio, not just in equine photography, but canine and portraiture too. Viki put her name forward, and I couldn’t be more pleased that she did, as I am really chuffed with how my shots came out. Throughout lockdown, I have been busy completeing a manner of different photography courses, so I was really excited to put all these new skills that I had learnt about to good use. We chose to shoot at her local woodland, which I had not been to before organising this shoot, and it was just beautiful.
Let’s Get Shooting!
There were so many different lighting scenarios I had the opportunity to work with, and so many backgrounds too. It was the perfect first shoot back, and I was really pleased with the outcome. We tried a manner of different scenarios, as the purpose of this shoot was not only to give Viki some lovely images, but to also help me to improve and finetune my skills as a photographer. We worked together to create shots in full tack, in just the bridle, and shots which (once edited) appeared tackless.
This was something that I was really excited about, so I would like to thank Viki for allowing me to use Flo as my guinea pig! I’d created my own nylon rope halter, so I could ‘work some magic’ during my editing of the photos, and ‘photoshop’ over the rope. However, we made sure that Flo was comfortable in this halter before we lead her anywhere or did anything. She couldn’t have been a more perfect model for me, and I am very pleased with how these images came out. This is not something that I will be encouraging to my clients, as it is vitally important that safety comes first. However, if a client requests these types of photos then it is something that I can do, but only with a calm and relaxed horse, in a safe environment.
Doesn’t she look like a unicorn in an enchated forest?! I am attempting to go for a more natural and organic style of editing, which, so far, is turning out really nice. I am always open for any suggestions on how you may want to see your photos, and if there is a certain style that you like, then I am more than happy to consult with you, so that you receive the images that you really want. However, I think it is important that, as a client, you know what type of photos you will be getting from your shoot.
